Lombardi’s back and he’s gonna play center, hey now, hey now…Lombardi’s back…..

I get the feeling that GMDM was the type of guy who broke up with a girl at Christmas only to ask her to the Spring dance a few months later. Like Vrbata and Michalek before him, Lombardi was brought back into the fold to perform a special role; in this case, centering a line and hopefully bringing a scoring punch.  He was acquired today for a conditional fourth round pick in 2014.

There are a lot of “ifs” around this reunion, the main one being if Lombo can bring the same kind of speed, intensity and skill that he did in his first stint in Coyote’s red. He’s been injured since then and his recent output could only be described as “meh.”

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a Coyote’s fan it’s this; I don’t question Maloney’s judgment. He’s able to see potential in players while Tip develops that potential into performance. During the fall, I had the opportunity to see Lombardi skate with the team during informal practices. He looked good and he worked hard, hard enough for me to be drawn to watch him closely every shift. I kept thinking, “Who is this guy and where have I seen him before?” That question was answered just a few hours ago. I like this player; I like this acquisition; especially if Boyd Gordon is going to continue to be the human puck magnet that he was last season. Ouch. We need the depth at center. Good move, Donny.

And Turris?

Sorry…. but we are never, ever, ever…getting back together.
